Dealing with large vehicle (Luton Van)
Posted by Dan on September 13, 2021 at 8:43 amMorning everyone.
I’ve been asked to wrap a Luton van, easy enough to do but I can’t fit this into my unit, I just don’t have the height. Doing it outside isn’t really an option and I don’t know anyone with a unit big enough to fit it in.
I think I might have to turn this job away but has anyone come across a popup gazebo that has a height clearance of 3m and would be wide enough to use as a wrapping bay?
Just an idea, I hate turning away work.

Never seen anything that big & would be scary in the lightest breeze. Personally, if you have any friendly customers who have warehouse space, they might be worth asking if its once in a blue moon. I look after a haulage company fleet & I’ve used their warehouse quite a few times for stuff too big for my unit. A case of beer is much cheaper than a gazebo

100% agree with you Kev.
Clutching at straws I think, I’ll have a word with a few friends to see if they know of anything.

Where are you base?
In the past we’ve asked if the customer had an area, or have look around for local warehouse/garages and see if they’ll lend you space in exchange for a few ££’s or a crate of beer. Local hauliage companies may be a good bet as they usually offer warehousing and have space to get their wagons in… plus you might pick up their signage too 🙂

Hemel Hempstead.
I’ll have a look for some and have a word, you never know as you say.

are you talking just the box on the rear or full cab unit and box/rear?

I’m talking about the whole unit. If it were just the box, I think I might be tempted to do it outside as it’s just a straight panel after all however the rest of the cab may be tricky to do along with a roof box that sits on top of the cab, I’m already thinking that might just be easier to do in 3 sections.

OK, now I understand a bit more mate.
Over the years I have wrapped literally hundreds of trucks from 7.5-ton box trucks to 32ft artic lorries and tankers. Other than the 7.5 tonners, most were done outside in all sorts of weather. Many were being re-loaded with forklifts driving into the back of them, getting ready to go back out on the road overnight, “while they were being wrapped”. Not fun at all but you learn fast the hard way! 🤔🤣Now to contradict myself… I wouldn’t wrap the cab unit outside! As you will know, it’s a different type of application, vinyl. parts need to be removed, vinyl needs to be stretched properly, temperate needs to be right, wind, dust, trimming, re-assemble blah blah blah…
so for the rear box, yes I would make the case clear on the pitfalls that can happen when installing outside but you are trying to accommodate the customer. but as for the cab, i would insist on coming up with an alternative.
* Borrow a space in a friend’s premises
* Hire or buy an inflatable workshop or gazebo for the cab.
* Approach a local bus or truck company and ask to rent the corner of their workshop for the day. I remember we did this many years ago. Gave the transport manager a few quid for the use of his space, and to this day, we get work from them! These type of companies have their buses and vehicles out all day on runs, so their big warehouses are lying completely empty.this was video’d around 2003 but only uploaded about 14 years ago. Oracal 951 Cast vinyl with application tape. got to love Scottish weather! 🤔🤣🤣

I wrap a fair few lutons, front deflectors are the hardest part, we have a 3mtr roller shutter so are limited. Sides are done in the car park if you have access to a flatbed truck you can pull alongside and reach every bit nice and easy! we then bring the front cab into the unit to wrap we let the air down on the from tyres and slowly bring the front 30% inside then use clear sheeting with magnets on the roller shutter and tape to van side. Not ideal and we are looking for bigger premises. I have 8 booked for next month would be great to get them inside but space is expensive!
