I have a client that wanted mirror vinyl applied to windows so that people couldn’t see in but they could see out. I explained that this relied on lighting conditions being darker inside the building than outside, and that the mirror effect would go away when it was darker outside than inside. So instead we have settled on using etch glass vinyl applied if horizontal strips on the glass to limit anyone seeing in when viewed from a distance, yet allow some visibility to the outside from those looking out. My question is can anyone suggest the optimum size of stripes and spaces to create the most effective solution?

I prefer 3mm / 2mm rather than 2mm / 2mm. the 3mm giving a bit more strength to the image or obscurity over the spaces. from the inside, there is very little difference, but from the outside, the image is stronger or in your case the limitation of seeing inside.

this rear bus window is based on 3mm / 2mm.

I have never seen this type of thing before. is this something I can do or do I have to buy it in?

You can do these yourself. Just print on grey backed material, and set up a cutter for the stripes. If laminating, it’s best to use optically clear. I think Rob may have done a tutorial a few years back, but I could be wrong.
