Colour change on a speed boat wrap, vinyl advice please?
Hi
Can anybody recommend a good vinyl for a wrap on a 20 foot speedboat, the guy wants it to go just below the waterline so l realise l will have to use an edge sealer, he wants a colour change vinyl (blue/green) as well. l have been looking at the Hexis HX30000 range.

That’s what we have always used for boat wraps. We have done up to 25m yachts with it. Important to seal the edges.

I’m sure you can use most of the cast wrapping films on the market, however ensure the application is above the water line and sealed with the recommended sealer. Also read the warranties of the chosen film for life expectancies

This is what we do, apply the vinyl, then run masking tape roughly 3mm up from the edge on the vinyl you want to seal, we then apply another masking tape 3mm onto the hull below the vinyl, so that leaves a gap where you can seal it onto the hull. We then paint the sealer over the tape covering the gap, and then let it dry a little so it doesnt run, and then remove the tape so you are left with clean lines.
We also use the hexis sealer, and it is hardly visible when dry, but that does depend on the colour/finish of the vinyl. Another trick we were taught, if the sealer is a bit gloopy you can make it more runny by adding white spirit to dilute it, and then it paints on easier and you get a flatter finish. (Mix it up in a separate pot until you get the consistency you like) You can practice on some offcuts of pvc foam for example until you are happy with the technique. You can then also take this to the job and show the client the finish. If they dont like it, then we have sealed and then masked off another 5mm above the seal, so they can then antifoul up to that line effectively covering the sealer so it’s not visible. Dont be tempted to just seal with antifoul because antifoul is designed to break up when things stick to it, and eventually it will give. Also best product we have found to remove the hexis sealer if client wants a colour change is acetone. Hope that is clear and helps.

Thanks Dan , thats great, and you also answered my next question about hexis edge sealer, i haven’t had mine that long and it is getting a bit thick and l did wonder if you could thin it :thumbsup:
