Church signpainting
Posted by Neil Davey on 12 October 2008 at 19:47Hi, been slapping some more paint up.
Here’s one I finished Friday.
All 1 Shot, not a sticky thing in sight, other than the paint when it was drying.
About 12 feet wide and executed off a double extension ladder set up in the pulpit.

Very nice Neil
Must have been quite a task on ladders.
Did you have to complete a risk assessment first?
or is this sort of work covered by a higher authority..Peter

Absolutely gorgeous.
Wonderful work and a pleasure to look at.
That’ll give the congregation something to admire when the pastor gets long-winded!

That is superb Neil, lettering is is top notch.
I think Harry done something similar a while back.

Spot on Neil love the ribbons
Nice quiet relaxing place to work
and for once the customer didn’t want you to work on SundayTerry

Sweet bit of lettering and scrollwork there Neil.
Wouldn’t have fancied doing it off a ladder though. -
Neil that is absolutely beautiful, that must be very satisfying, thanks for showing

My wife took the words out of my mouth – that is beautifully done.
Where is that then?

I was just showing this pic to my son, Justis, who is on the dark side of 12.
He was blown away by the shading on the ribbon.
His response was "Holy Sh!t!"
Now I have to wash his mouth out with soap.
😉
We both also think the church itself is really cool.

That is so good! I wish I could do it!
Only today, I was stood in a Church near Barmouth, and said I’d like to have a crack at re-painting the inscription that goes round the walls of the building. Of course I wouldn’t be starting from scratch like you! I’ve already done a little hand painted lettering on the board with the list of previous Vicars, but it’s nothing compared to this!
Keep up the (very) good work! Not enough traditional signwriters anymore!

Thank you everyone for the positive comments.
It’s always a pleasure to do work like this which unfortunately nowadays doesn’t come along that often, in this area anyway.
It was a peaceful place to work, and your right Terry the customer didn’t mind me not working a Sunday, even their Boss had a rest on that day.
As for working off a ladder, it wasn’t too bad. My back ached a little as all the signpainter types on here know of only too well but I did a 20 mile walk in the Brecon Beacons on Saturday which soon sorted that out 😕
Gareth, it’s in Baneswell, Newport.
Jill, tell your son not to feel bad, I had my Ipod on and when songs by Limp Bizkit came on with all the f’s etc. I had to lookout for the lightning bolt 😀

Neil,
Is that the one in the middle of the road at ‘top of hill’?
I’ll go and have a peak if you don’t mind, I love strolling about up there, that’s the posh bit of Newport isn’t it?

Stunning work!! 😮
I love the shading and the lettering.
Very nicely done.Stevo

Gareth, I know the Church you mean, it’s not that one but a smaller Baptist Church closer to town.
Thanks Stevo, I always enjoy the shading and blending, it gives it a bit of ‘pop’ as I think you say over there.
I also saw an old black and white picture of the Church interior from about 60 – 70 years ago and the ribbon was there then, and the decoration on the pews and upper flooring was very elaborate.
Just imagine the men doing it back then, they were real craftsmen and obviously took great pride in their work.
