My printer is begining to show fine lines in some print colours. It is apparent on cyan and black – but not on magenta and yellow. The magenta/yellow print head was replaced a couple of years ago, the black/cyan head is still the original from when the machine was new.

I’m assuming the black/cyan head is approaching the end of it’s life and is due for replacement, but before I rush out and buy a new head I wanted to check here first in case I was jumping to the wrong conclusions.

Attached are samples of cmyk print colours and a print head test.

Can someone please advise if the print head is needing to be replaced, or is something else causing this?

I’ve seen them a lot worse than that Phill. You could try swapping the cap top over and see if you can clean it better. If the cap top isn’t working efficiently then the head would deteriorate. If it starts to improve with them swapped over then you know to replace it.

Genuine Roland ones are much better than generic ones by the way.

Thanks for the advice Stafford – just to check my understanding – you think perhaps the capping station isn’t making a perfect seal leading to undercleaning of the head?

Here you go Chris – much clearer pictures of the test print and 100% black print

That’s right Phill. Although looking at the revised test draw picture, the other head isn’t looking too clever either. Have you had the caps replaced in a while? Also, I’m assuming yours has the newer style pump? It’s the bigger pump called sub pump and most Roland printers have been upgraded. They’re much better and rarely break or block.

as stafford says try so new cap tops as its mostly deflecting. as a tip for the future give the carts a shake now and again especially if 400 ones

    start saving

in the mean time think you are using colourrip increase to 720×720 by 16 pass or 8 pass if using 4 pass may hide the problem.
