Buying Van from Germany, worth it?
Posted by PhilB on 19 December 2004 at 13:06A friend is on the lookout for a new volkswagen van, he’s asked me to look online to see if there is any information about gettin a better deal by buying from europe (Germany in particular).
Has anyone looked into this for themselves, any dealers or sites worth looking at?
Any info or advice would be great.

Give Iain Somerville a call 07816663816.
He specialises in commercial vehicles Scotland and North England.
If he cant get you the deal you want no-one will.
Tell him Igave you his details, he owns business vehicle contracts.Frank

is it not better buying direct from ireland? i know a garage close to us knocks spots of many competitors on brand new vans as he buys them in from ireland. cant remmeber the ins & outs of it all to advise…
thing about buying from say germany is your stuck with a left hand drive then when you go to sell it on/trade it in you get less for it or harder to sell private.also, have you checked MACRO out for vehicles… yes MACRO… :lol1:
i checked a brochure a while back on all the vans they did and again,, thousands of pounds cheaper. -
My husband bought a new imported Irish Transit lwb. Identical to UK spec but a saving of over £3000.
They all come out of the same factory!Marcella

Hi Phil,
It was bought from a broker here in Glasgow. The van was already in the country. It was originally supplied with an Irish registration but we requested a british plate which was done very quickly by DVLA. All in all it was very easy and saved a lot of cash. Will certainly do it again.

We are just south of the border and there are a number of agents (VW, Citroen, Renault etc) that sell to the UK. I think a good few of the big agents in Dublin sell to the UK. The local VW agent is in the middle of nowhere and apparently got top Irish VW dealer of the year, must have been due to vehicle sales as his service and attitude are very poor.
We have to pay Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) on new cars / vans and it cripples the price. Just after buying a transit with a few extras €23K.
Exporting cars and vans was big business a few years ago, l thought that the dealers or the UK Govt. had closed whatever loophole people were using…..maybe not. We don’t see that many transporter going across the border now.
Spec’s on cars and vans are different than UK models but it is just usually just trim and equipment levels.
