BSGA awards for 2005
Posted by Guy Burt-Davies on 12 November 2004 at 19:26OK, I’ll start this thread by admitting I’m biased and want to win an award for our signage across the country for The Junction but having seen some of the stuff posted on here would suggest that there are a few contenders for either the vehicle livery of the year, digital sign of the year, small signmaker of the year or the craftsman award.
Why should the likes of SSDM or Signs Express have the field to themselves? These firms don’t seem to have half the passion for their trade that people like Dewi or Big G have (apologies for taking your names in vain lads) so why should they be the only ones eligible to have their work recognised?
I’d be interested to hear your views….. (chat.)

quick reply mate,
i agree…
100%, just about to get a bite and a beer. will be interesting to see other replies.
on that, i have been discussing some things with someone just now that may be able to help me change some of that, just like you say.
if it happens, we should see more and more recognition for the smaller sign firms. some of the smaller firms produce some outstanding stuff like you have said and its about time someone tried to thrust it under the noses of these industry figures.
thats one of my goals. one i intend to make happen…anyway.. once i have got off my horse and stopped saving the world from ending :lol1: :lol1: ill get back in with this discussion.
look forward to hearing comments.
if you are up for an award, or have the potential to be, go for it. all guns blazing.. who wouldnt? & best of luck mate. 😉

I don’t mind you mentioning my name matey. 🙂
As it happens, I did indirectly win a BSGA award in 2003. That is to say, signs I designed and made won an award for the client.
Anyway, I would like to see more of the smaller outfits getting recognition for their work. Good thread idea.

Dito to Big G, no worries including my name in there, quite flattered 😀
I didn’t even know what the BSGA was until you mentioned it, just looked it up and read about this years awards…. 😮 😮 😮 Blimey there were some nice signs there, I really like the winning entry for the interior sign of the year.
Personally I’d love to see a member of uksb win an award, whether they be a large or small firm. There are some great designers, signmakers, signwriters and ppl I would consider craftsman (Nobby Thomas for one) here on the boards, and half an hour in the Show Us Your Stuff forum certainly shows what talent resides here.
Again, dito to Andy, great thread started here 😀
Cheers, Dewi

sorry Guy, out of interest mate. have you any links to the work being acknowledged?
not sure if you worked on it, but i was impressed by the totem merson done just of the m8, kingston bridge for the daily record/sunday mail.
good to see your posts mate. 😉
if you win an award, let me know. ill use it as a news feature. best of luck 😉

i think the way to start is to nominate a category, and sponsor it.
The category would be “best sign voted by sign makers”
But the awards are a bit like the Brit awards, those who have most influence and cash get to win. Small firms don’t stand a chance because they have no advertising value.
Lots of people can sing, but unless Simon picks you, you ain’t going nowhere!
am I cynical? -
no your right mate, thats were this site comes in. got something up my cuff and it will rear its head early next year 😉 trust me :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:
we just need to be placed firmly under everyones noses 😉 -
nice one pete!!
i think simon cowel is totally fab……..cause he’s honest!! 😛 the music industry criticts have to be harse (the only way to learn) 😀 😀
but you tend to wonder when you hear the likes of boyzone………westlife……oh i can name a few!! 😮 (it’s all money) 🙄
the good old john peel days have gone….god bless!!
sorry for hugging the post!! (i just love music) 😉

Rob, although we as a company had winning signs in 2002 & 2003 we missed out last year – but are planning our comeback in 2005! My clients work hasn’t won – yet (but I’m working on that)
I was talking to a couple of the BSGA technical committee earlier this week and mentioned UKSB & UKSG – they agreed that more new blood needs to be brought into the BSGA (otherwise Craig from Signs Express could end up being the next chairman!!). When I saw that nominations for next years awards were being called for thought that I would stir the pot on here a bit, the majority of entrants are usually the same old gang and whilst I’m not knocking any of them (well, not really anyway) feel sure that a lot of the people who are active on the forum could give them more than just a run for their money.
Signage is in your blood, you can’t just buy a franchise and expect to be a signmaker, there’s a hell of a lot more to it than that and I would love to see someone from UKSG stride up and collect an award next april – I’ll be there shouting and cheering for them (after I’ve collected my award of course 😛 )

Thanks for your agreement Rob, I have no reason not to trust you. Hope you enjoyed your Buds, I’m using Hobgoblins

couldnt agree more mate, many members have much to offer. talent is oozing out.
you have every right to go for it, why not? i am sure you/merson will do it.on another note:
has the heathrow contract wound up yet? was 2 years i think, yeh?
any major probs encountered? did you/the company learn anything from this project?
also, is merson traffic still on the go, as i havent seen as many trucks out on the m8 lately?
just being nosey mate… sorry 😕 -
neon wizard
out of curiosity, how does one become nominated or put forward an entry for such a prestigious prize like this? -
Rob, nosey is good 😀
The contract is actually for the majority of BAA airports not just heathrow and is still going very well thanks (8 years and counting!!). Working on or around airports creates unique problems but has proved to be a real education as well as giving us the opportunity to manufacture some really great signs 😉
Merson Traffic is still on the go although competition is very stiff for that market, as a business we were faced with two options, cut margins to ridiculous (loss making) levels to try and ‘buy in’ the business or price at a fair level and accept that there will always be customers who buy on price not quality and service. We chose the second option and it seems to have been the right decision.
In answer to sign-on’s question there is an entry form in this months Sign Directions magazine, you can nominate yourself (and why not?) and there is a testimonial box for your client to add a few words in support of your nomination. If anyone wants an entry form – and I hope you all do – then I’ll try and scan in the form and post it on here.
PLEASE don’t let me go to the awards next year and have to applaud 👿 ‘the franchise sign firm(s) 👿 – give them a shock – let’s get a UKSB member to win!!

hi all im new to here but i was at the 2004 bsga and got awarded a highly recommended cert for my efforts in supply and installation of signs to a hotal in a horrible place called antigua..terrible job but someone had to do it..all that sun sea and rum..oh and signs!
ill submit a transit van this yr i covered in chrome for a ford ad..see where that gets me..no where probably..but it did seem that it was a social meeting venue for the big names to rub shoulders, best bit was the free casino afterwards.
looking at rome next..
