Banner welding and Eyeleting Recommendations Required
Posted by Warren Beard on July 17, 2024 at 10:07 amHi All
Looking to purchase a banner welder and automatic loading eyelet machine to have a high-speed banner finishing process.
We traditionally apply edge tape and manually eyelet but looking to speed this up. Any recommendations for decent reliable machines would be great. Thanks

Hi Warren
I think UKSB member, David MacDonald at Poppy Signs mentioned he had purchased a semi-automatic banner hem welder a while back.
with any luck, he may see this post and better advise you on the route he took.I purchased a Leister Banner welder about 20 years ago now. My thoughts were exactly like yours, save on tape, speed up production etc.
However, there is a real knack for using them properly for “one person” with big banners. The process is simple enough as you can see in the video, but the video does not show you the 600-degree heat jetting out the side of piping-hot metal parts. 🤨 I burned myself a good few times during that learning curve. 🤣You need a large dedicated area to be able to manufacture them. So I assume the volume of banners you are putting out, must be high?! Do not get me wrong, although I would make whatever size banner that came in, about 30ft x 15ft was as big as was needed. So it was no way as big as far as building wraps go.
Long story short, we still do banners, still make them up to those sizes and we still use the tape. Not in the same volume as we did back then, but still.
My banner welder was sold on this website about 4 years ago, and was in perfect condition because it was hardly used.the picture I have listed below shows it at about £4000 but you should be able to get them cheaper from Liester directly, maybe! I am sure I bought mine directly from Liester, as they were exhibiting at Sign & Digital UK.

Another option for you may be a high-frequency welder.
The same thing applies, a large dedicated area for manufacturing is required.I first saw one of these in action in London when I visited B&P Light Brigade about 22 years ago!
they were giving me a tour of their premises and their “Trade Brigade” division which provided trade printing to the industry. I was watching a guy hemming a banner and from memory. it was a very long bench with a trough along the side, similar to what you get on the side of a rolls-roller to hold the banner.
The frequency welder was about the size of the one in this video, but “I think” the overhanging arm of the welder moved along, sort of suspended. so you fused say a metre, lifted and moved along, down, fused, lifted, moved along and so on.The one in this video looks stationary, so the banner would need to be fed through it, which you can imagine, handling banners like this, especially big ones and keeping the hem running true, is not easy. so moving over hanging gantry of some sort would be more helpful. Sorry for being vague but it was a long time ago. 😏😀

Or, you could jump up a level and go fully automated. 😎

If you use PVC-Free, check they work with your material before purchase! I understand some PVC-Free do not weld correctly.

Good point Colin.
The Leister banner welder would buckle the hell out of cheap banner material.
when we first got the machine we practiced on budget stuff, but that lasted 5 minutes. 🤨🤣 -
Hi Warren / Rob
We bought this banner welder way back in 2013 and still use it today, link to the web page below. For the initial price and the amount of banners we produce it is been a machine that has taken some time to pay for itself but overall still glad we got it.
Note that the video shows 3 people using it but that was the day we got it and we were just testing it. You can use it on your own but we tend to have one person feeding and one keeping it straight coming out – still hugely quicker than tape hemming, much stronger and neater (and will roll up without puckering).
New Banner Welding machine arrives
If we were looking at getting one today then there seem to be other options available that are much cheaper – I saw an advert for this one that looks good
Liester Banner Welder web page
There is a bigger version of ours on eBay, the Miller Weldmaster T300 – Banner Welder
Hope that helps
Cheers
Dave.

Hi Rob / David
This is some great info thanks, will take a closer look, we are moving soon into a new unit twice the size so will have plenty space. To be honest we don’t do loads of banners but will be trying to change that and when the point comes to change to a quicker system I want to be ready so thanks for the info and links.
Much appreciated.
Warren
