well, after all the grief getting it here, the rest of the job was pretty simple, well…. not without a couple of hick-ups…

worked until 3am this morning to make sure everything was finished and ready to go, boy, do i know it now!

next prob was the fact that my third tressle is a giant step ladder, the overhanging building wouldn’t let me put it up, but….

first bonus points were awarded to the builder, who’d left behind his ally scaffold tower.. that’ll do nicely! combined with my scaffold planks and tressles, we had a 7m walkway to play on!

more bonus points awarded to ourselves when every single old screw holding the old frame in (30+yr old) came out without a hitch!

points deducted for not noticing the hanging strips went on the back of the panel…. every sign in a hanging frame i’ve seen, and all my samples, have the hanging strip on the front of the panel… not this one! only found out when i went to slide them in on site, had to chisel off the short hanging bars which wasn’t ideal, but did the job.

i think we left the house… ahem.. the workshop, at half nine and were back home by half one! not bad i thought!

    anyways, waffled enough 😀

lightbox is 4.765m x 605mm, it was made by sign trade supplies (eventually) and looks pretty good to be fair. it’s damned lucky they built the size exact though, 5mm longer and it wouldn’t have fitted between the brick piers!

went with clear panels for the halo effect (see other threads), all vinyls are oracle 551, quite a nice vinyl, a few marks are visible but hopefully they’ll vanish soon enough!

the frosted glass panels were done on tuesday and fitted in the evening, i think they look good myself!

anyways, just thought that since i’ve bored ya’ll with the run up to this job, i might as well bore you some more!! 😀

    Hugh.

ps, no lit up shots yet, leccy needs to wire the other end in.

oh yeah, i also made the builders board in the corner of the window 😀

oooh, and the open closed sign in the door, printed on some magic touch vinyl with the oki and laminated before applying to some 2mm foamex. works well!

Nice job Hugh, do you have help on jobs like that? Looks like it was a bit of a sod to hold up under the roof while you got some screws in!

    thanks guys,

this light box was too much for one person, but pretty easy with two, a pal i sometimes work with (in trees!) helped on this occasion, i’d normally prefer another signmaker if it was in any way tricky, went like a dream to be honest, i’d even brought flood lights in anticipation of a monster cock-up!

holding it tight to the top with one hand and putting the first screw in was the hardest part, but once there was a screw in each end it was light enough to stay put, we just checked it was level from there and wazz’d in another 20+ screws around it.

Night time photos will follow as soon as i know he’s had it wired up at the other end!

    cheers.

    HI Matt,
it’s in polegate mate, just around the corner form the station.

Graeme, 2 panels, the join is across the first ‘A’, there’s a small strip of brown vinyl covering the joins, i wouldn’t have bothered but where they rebate the panels, they don’t bother to polish it and it looked milky 😕

I could just make out that join, but because it wasn’t centered it threw me a bit. Bloody good job on the flood and lining up….. :lol1:

as Chris says, its almost midnight, been dark for almost 6 hours and still no night shot…… :lol1: :lol1: 😀

the cheek! my bills are very reasonable!! i hope!

no night shot until later in the week, spoke to the customer this morning at his other shop and he reckons the sparky won’t be back til wed’s at least!

re the flood / lining up…

when i made the cut file, i made the flood the exact same size as the panel, using that as registration, that said, something didn’t seem quite right with the second panel so i flooded the back but left the front lettering off until the panels were in the sign, then i could simply line up the cream / gold letters exactly, no risk of error. worked! there was a slight misalignment (vertically) on the letters, but nothing that can been seen externally.

    Good job Hugh.
Many years ago I did a similar job with it all loaded up on the estate car roof.
Doesn’t do much for the street cred when on site though.

aye, I’ve been meaning to sign up the car for ages (colour change + graphics etc) but since chatting with my accountant t would seem i could probably buy a fairly new van, put £30 deisel a week in, and still not spend as much as i currently am on fuel! so now deliberating what / how to do it, credit is not easy to come by right now!
