  • Application tape alternative, is there anything?

This may sound like a daft question because I imagine if there was we would all know about it.

Is there an alternative application tape to the clear stuff?
The paper stuff does the job nicely but the plastic clear stuff is great to line stuff up, but horrible to work with. It is also hard to snap or tear as you work.

I just wanted to ask if there was an alternative version of it that’s maybe smooth and tears easier?

I use both, but its hard getting used to and a pain with big graphics when your jumping back and forth with two types. also stocking both at sizes can be a pain.

    what do you do?

    Hi Jeff

I dont use much clear tape anymore. I used to use it for intricate stuff but lots of that is printed these days. But clear tape is great for lining up graphics. definitely easier than paper tape.

My problem just now is that i am trying to lower my stock. Covid has opened my eyes to needless stock and i think the clear tape falls into that category. I must hold about 10 different widths of application tape. prior to covid i also had about 7 widths in the clear version of the application tape. Just in case!
I am bleeding out my stock for sure and i think the clear stuff will be one of the ones to go!

I hate the clear tape. Mainly the sound it makes on the squeegee, like nails on a blackboard. Ew!
Lining up is best done using register marks or lines and cutting the app tape up to that line, which then lines up with the reg mark of the colour below, or the edge of the board or some such. Easy with paper tape.
I dont see clear tape having any use whatsoever other than to make me feel nauseous😊
But to answer the original question, I dont think there is anything else.

I use the paper application tape for everything. I use Oracals.

I really do not like the clear PVC clear application tape. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great lining up graphics and being able to see what’s immediately behind the tape. but that’s where the benefits stop! I don’t like the texture of it and just find it limiting in many ways, and as you say, it does not tear like the paper application tape.

For me, its one type of tape and that’s Oracal paper application tape. I’ve tried many many brands over the years and settled on that. 👍

I find the clear plastic stuff horrid to work with. it tends to pucker up between letters in the hot weather.
