Apple Air Book
Does anyone have one of these. I would like to buy one but I am finding it difficult to justify, any good, we run mostly Macs including Macbooks and Powerbooks and desktops. However I can’t seem to convince the Boss (the wife) that this would be an essential addition.
Ammunition please!!!!!!

I’d love to help you out, but I’m afraid that I can’t even justify an Airbook for myself. I think that they are only any good for specialist use, like the person who does a lot of travelling, especially on public transport, where size and weight might be important features.
My opinion is that for anybody with more mundane needs, the extra specification; especially with regard to connectivity, and lack of optical drive issues, make the Powerbook and Macbook the better option.
I also think that the Air is a most unApplelike bit of kit, and way out of keeping with everything else that they make. To touch and feel, it seems more like something from the cheaper end of a Windows laptop range. It is very plasticy and seems to lack substance and robustness – completely the opposite of the unibody construction of the other models. When I saw one in the flesh, even as a big Apple fan, I was very disappointed.
I’m considering replacing my old Powerbook G4 15", mainly to get an Intel processor to be able to run Snow Leopard. I’d like another Powerbook, but a Macbook will do my job perfectly adequately.

Thanks John, I haven’t used one yet, we now have a new Apple store which has just opened in Cardiff and I was going to take a trip down. It doesn’t sound good in terms of quality. I like some of the different laptops that they produce, we used to have the duo docks, they were nice and quite powerful for the time, we also had a 1400c which again was easy to expand slimline and allowed you to change the covers which was different, followed by a 3400, which was the top of the range at the time with speakers built into the back and a massive range of upgrades, in fact the 3400 is still going strong, I recently gave that away to a friend with a modem card (still working), SCSII Cables, Zip drive and a stylewriter.
Forgot to say, I’ll wait for the new tablet to come out instead, whever that may be??
It’s a shame about the airbook would have been a nice quirky addition .

Switched from years of pc use to a macbook pro 15" three months ago. Best business move I’ve made. Love the thing. Illustrator and Photoshop fly on it.
Nice addition to have my favourite music in the background on itunes without messing up performance on the machine -
I am certainly going to be jumping 0n the mac bandwagon this year…sick of glitches and crashes and go slows…..where to start is the question…im going to research over christmas and spend some of the tax mans money

It’s not without it’s foibles though but I think after you’ve experienced working on a mac that won’t matter.
Go for it, you’ll never look back.
By the way I’m not on the Apple payroll 😀

Bought my first mac 2 weeks ago and have been wandering why its taken so long, have to run coreldraw using parellels and xp but still a damn sight better than my £900 dell. Definately a joy to work with, just no uksb toolbar!

The toolbar did work Dave, it just stopped with the OS 10.6 Snow Leopard upgrade.
I hope that an updated toolbar will work, and am just waiting for one to appear.
It’s a small price to pay though, isn’t it? 😀

is there not a corel for mac? Thats what I use mainly for vector stuff.

Unless you run it under emulation.

Hi Cheryl.
You can use software like parallels. This allows you to run windows alongside the mac operating system so you can install any pc software you like.
The only downside is you then have to go down the route of anti virus software once you install windows. We use illustrator and it really is very similar to Corel I find -

I’m on Snow Leopard latest update and my UKSB toolbar works fine 😕 😛

Been converted to Macs over the last 12 months. PC power is just over. Why emulate PC software on the Mac for it all to go pear shaped? Buy the Mac, buy the software and don’t look back

My thoughts as well, why run PC on a MAC pointless. If you need a PC (as we do for versaworks and Omega, set it up correctly) buy one.
I don’t see a great deal of difference in the desktop machines and actually do enjoy using a PC however there is very little competition when it comes to laptops. I have found MACs to last a lot longer in terms of durability and lngevity as well as battery power. A little more expensive but well worth the investment.Decided to buy the airbook, I’d rather have one of these than give the money to the taxman.

"I cannot comment fairly" because i have not used my mac long enough or regularly enough, but what i will say is…
I have used PC’s for as long as i remember…
Due to extensive work editing video format files. And resulting in the files crashing and losing hours of video editing at a time. i decided to switch to a full MAC Pro System running top end Final Cut pro video software and Mac Photoshop, solely for my video and image editing only. all combined i was easy out £5000…
the difference… its been a very pleasant change, i love the MAC and i love the whole clean, fresh approach to my computers.
but down to nitty gritty, there is allot of "little changes" to get used too, which do get annoying and can create headaches whilst adjusting…however, using the specified £800+ software, coupled by £3000+ i was out on my high spec MAC pro…
I am still suffer just as much crashes as i did on my "high spec PC" £1500, running a £70 video editing software package.
I will add, the PC video editing software package has many more elaborate, easy to follow features than my MAC does.what the MAC software/computer does that the PC doesnt is, when it crashes, and it does just as often. it Saves the current work, without lossing past workload/labour.

well that is a good start….. I am looking forward to trying something new…shame everything is so expensive tho!!..software too!
sorry Jason…hope ive not hijacked the thread….but go get an air book if the money is heading for the tax man…that is a good reason to get one…rather have the airbook myself!! -
No bother with the hijack Cheryl, always handy to have a different point of view when purchasing these machines. The software is expensive but definitely worth the investment. I’d always buy the CS suite, as you know they have released a few different versions worth having photoshop, illustrator, browser and indesign. Are you buying a laptop or desktop machine?

To be quite honest, if Corel Draw X5 is being developed to work on multiplatforms like the MAC then I will move us across, they tried before but it didn’t sell well but Mac has made big inroads in the last few years… got to be worth another go Corel?
