Anyone using Signlab 9? Views?
Posted by Lorraine Clinch on June 14, 2011 at 2:13 pmHi, I keep threatening to upgrade from SL 7.1, but never get around to it. Is anyone using it? I know Peter has been trialling it, so hopefully he will see this, but will be interesting to get a few peoples feedback.
It would be really good to be able to work from PDF files, for example.
I would also like to know if there are loads of add-ons, or if the package comes complete etc.I’m off to look at the website now,
😛

I’ve been running V9 a while and as a vinyl only guy the advantages over V8 are not huge but fine tweaking and improved filters are good. Print and cut users will see the main improvements, transparency support has now been added. Peter N is better placed to comment on the print side

Hi lorraine,
SL9 has improved print production, and the user interface is quite easy to figure out, it is better for print and cut than SL8. but does have a few things that were ommitted from sl8.
It has a quite a few plug ins that come as standard, but i think "fluid mask" is now an extra, its a good tool for vectoring though.
cadling has its own plug ins which can create good effects, and also a limited number of Eye Candy effects that come in the box.
If you want demo I can do you a netviewer session to show you aroundPeter

Hi Peter, the demo vids look good, and I can see that it would make an improvement in my design production etc.
What is a netviewer session? (I know, I’m getting REALLY old! 😥 ) -

LOL Peter! I have Richard Langley in tomorrow to service the VC, so IF I don’t need something stupid like a new head (Is that right, £750 + vat per head?!) then I shall invest in SL 9. Otherwise it will have to wait a while. Cheers Peter, I will take you up on your offer when I know what I am doing.

🙁 last time a checked printheads were about €550 + fitting, so sounds about right.

Re: SL9 – you can download the full version from Cadlink that isn’t restricted in any way. So print, cut, save – do whatever for (I think) 15 days.
Works by registering every startup back to cadlink to verify activation of the demo.
So if you fancy a full play for a couple of weeks – great.
If it’s not for you then just uninstall.

Thanks for that info Dave, I shall be trying that!
Signlab upgrade is definitely on the cards, the printer didn’t needs new heads, so all is well at the sign shop! :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:Lorraine
-
Oh it was a printer head you were talking about Lorraine :lol1: ……silly me 😳
-
:lol1: :lol1: Martin, just re-read the posts to see what you meant. Oh how I wish I could have a new head-I’d ask for more memory next time! 😛

Lorraine, If you’re want to save money, you can get signlab 9 for versa works. Only difference is that the engine for running a plotter/printer is stripped out. Going for this option myself soon with a saving of about 500 euro. This only helps if you have versa works…hope this helps……..Gavin.
-
Hi Gavin, thanks, I will investigate that option too.
-
Gavin, Signlab for versaworks is still on version 8 or should I say mine is, have they launched version 9 with the new things like transparency. If not will they launch this as an update????
Would love some of the new features in 9 to be added to signlab for versaworks. -
sorted i wish to upgrade NOW! Can’t wait looks amazing.
Brian on site tomorrow and Friday but if you or Paul can call I will give card details Thanks Rich -
Well, I have downloaded & installed the trial version, (be warned, I thought I had a reasonably fast internet connection here, but it took a good 2 hours, file size 1.1 GB) looks good so far, but literally just started trialling it. Could be a long night! :lol1:
Got a couple more signs to create, then I can play in earnest!Lorraine
(Edited to correct phraseology!)

Upgraded to 9 yesterday and have to say very impressed.
Thanks Impact for the speedy service Rich -
Hi Lorraine I have now bought sign lab 9 for Versaworks could not get it to work at first but works ok now maybe my expectations were too high after using vmx but next time we are down will bring the lappy and dongle and you can have a play
-
Well, whilst I am having to re-load all my software after a Windows problem I decided I would buy Signlab 9, the trial was good, so now really excited! Just wish I had ordered it yesterday so I could have used it over the weekend! Paul at Impact gave me a really good price for SL9 for Versaworks.
Lorraine 😀

Lorraine, have tried to contact you on your works number & the pub number. Can you please give me a call if you read this before 4.30pm today.
-
Hi Brian, just to let you know that Signlab has arrived, now to find the time to get it up and running! A quick question, is it necessary to uninstall my old version of SL?
Lorraine
-
Hi Brian, the dongle is for v. 4.95 (ancient, I know!)
-
other than printing, theres not much you cannot do with 4.95. damn good software even today…
-
quote Lorraine Clinch:Hi Brian, the dongle is for v. 4.95 (ancient, I know!)
You could leave it on, I would uninstall it though as you have a new dongle. Have you another PC you could use the 4.95 on?
-
Hi Brian, I will leave it on, as I will be able to cut to my plotter with it, just didnt want any conflicts. I now need advice.
I have installed SL9 from the disc, but for some reason VMP has not installed, and I cant even see it on the disc. Is there any reason? I am stumped, have no idea! -
Hi Lorraine If you have the Versaworks version VMP is not needed just load sign lab and restart then just start sign lab it will ask you where vesaworks is located find it, click on it to create the link it will then work

Just looking through all the old Signlab posts for more info, and realised I had left this post ‘hanging’, as it were.
To conclude, I have been using V. 9 via my Versacamm very successfully for months now, my printer is wonderful, and apart from learning about profiles (use Metamark Md5 profiles for most vinyls) and learning about RGB/CMYK and colour profiles (purchase the RGB to CMYK Pantone Bridge book, fantastic!) I still haven’t been using Signlab 9 to anywhere near its full potential, as I am just too busy fulfilling the orders coming through the door every week.
I have loads of stuff to learn still, we will probably have v. 12 before I have started learning v. 9!
