ADVICE on purchasing new solvent or eco solvent printer! please help

Hi to anyone that can help 🙂

im looking to invest in a new printer so i no longer have to outsource digitally printed banners, or vehicle graphics/wraps again.

i nearly bought one off ebay, but decided with my business head on to instead spend more and lease a new one, that way i will have support from the company and they should hopefully come set it up show me the basics..

    > Can anyone recomend any good companies first off?

    > Do i go solvent or eco solvent?

    —————————————

Most importantly what do i go for!?!?

my budget is not set but as everyone knows in these times the less i have to spend the better.
Although i would ove the top spec daddy of all machines, i can not afford it 🙁
the cost of my lease per month has to be something i can easily pay each month through the work i produce on it

but im pretty certain i want:
    > something that can print 1370 width rolls vinyl
    > Built in cutting feature

i have looked at a few ive found on a leasing company (www.designsupply.co.uk)

    > ValueJet 1304 Eco Solvent Ultra – 54in – 2A0 – 54
The ValueJet 1304 printer is an affordable solution developed for signmakers wanting to invest into their own eco-solvent printer. Using mutoh’s thirdgeneration piezo printhead

    > VersaArt RS-640 – 2A0 – 64
Integrating the latest technologies from Roland’s award-winning VersaCAMM and SolJet Pro III models,

    > SP-540i / 300i – A0 – 30
Professional and powerful, the VersaCAMM™ SP-i series delivers reliable performance and unmatched print quality for a low initial investment.

    ——————–

Am i looking at the right sort of machines?

Are any of these any good for what i need?

Do you have any better sugeestions?

Please help me so i can continue to grow my business in 2013 🙂

I don’t own a solvent or eco solvent machine myself so can’t comment on makes or suppliers.
You said you are looking at printing inhouse rather than outsourcing & listed a range of things you would like to be able to do yourself.
Only thing I would say is that you need to have a good look around at what vinyl widths are available for print media, you don’t want to go buying a machine that prints 1370 wide only to find that a lot of the wrap materials are a bit wider & you have limited yourself to what brands you can use.
Seems that vinyl widths are increasing all the time so if your looking for a machine to last a few years it’s best to try & cover yourself best as possible.
Also if you are leasing look carefully at what the terms & conditions are as some tie you to using their ink & media which can be at an inflated price.

cheers didnt think about that, and can see allot of companies trying sneaky things like that. i would potentially like to get the catridge kits where you top them up from a bottle, but then would that void the warrenty? or would they never know?
this is as hard a decision as buying a car!

For "Print & Cut combined", i personally would only look at Roland.
look at the Versa range of machines. These machines were excellent when first launched nearly 10 years ago and have only got better… they have come along way with updates and modifications over that time.

be up front and honest with those you are buying from. tell them exactly the amount of work you have to cover your costs "for now". but ask them to tie something into the deal that will maybe allow you to upgrade in 6 months should your work flow increase.

like most new machine plans you will be tied to the inks as martin has said.

you should also ask if the company have any second user or ex-demo machines available…

amongst others a Roland agent would be Grafityp.co.uk

Have bought 2 Rolands from Grafityp without issue.

Plus they are only down the road from you and have them in their showroom.

We have 2 SP540v but to be honest we don’t like printing banners on them but great for vinyl, paper etc

    Cheers

Grafityp, have had two machines (roland), can’t fault tech side and if all else fails, you can take it out on Nigel.

cheers guys sounds like going to grafityps showroom would be the best idea,
atm im leaning towards eco solvent only because i wont have to ventelate the room.
is this correct? does everyone on here with a solvent printere ventilate their room?

Never bothered to ventilate my place and it’s never done me any harm *hair* :pink:

im guessing that using solvent or plastisol ink for screen printing is about the same risk, not like ive done that for years or used to in my tiny garage either :

Two machines ive been offered from one unamed company are:

Mimaki CJV130 Print and Cut system @ £12,995.00+vat

    Roland SP540 @ £10,350.00+vat

    are these good prices?

im going to grafityp next week hopefully to look at some machines in their showroom and that sounds very promising:)

Having used a valuejet for 2 years with eco inks I traded up to a print&cut machine and compared Roland and Mimaki at the time. For me the Mimaki had the edge on quality (for solid spot type colours) and the full solvent inks offer a better scratch resistance and quicker drying when compared to our Mutoh.

We have installed a 9" fan directly behind the printer to extract but when solid printing reds and blacks I still get complaints from the office staff in the next room and keep the door shut. It doesnt bother me to be honest but it is noticable.

Price seems about right for the Mimaki but I havent looked at Rolands recently.

Service from Hybrid is impeccable but the ongoing maintenance contract is quite expensive although we consider worth it.

thankyou very much colin, i think i need to see the qaulity of prints from both machines.
only me and another chap atm, so not too fussed about the smell, as worse smells come from the toilet on a monday morning 🙂 😮
