    Hi All,

I am after a printer which prints 64" and in white. What printer can i buy which is good but dont have to fork out a fortune?

there is the vs640 but your looking at a good 15k plus for that.

Anyone know of any other printers?

    thank you

does it matter how dense the white is?

The Edge can print a pretty good white, and can easily go for 100 yards using a single foil, so 64" is no problem at all 😀

When looking for a colour printer you need to look at what you want to use it for, get some feedback from people who have used theprinter you are looking for.

If you really want to print white be careful, its a minefield apart from the edge which can only print 12" wide most of the other printers have various problems. We have 7 wide format printers and none of them can print white because over the years we have never found one that we could trust

the new Roland looks good with white and metallics and shades of grey, but I want to hear from somone who has had one 6 months first, also its probalby out of your budget

Adrian, i could be wrong but i think Kev Flowers has one….
i know there are a good few now with the Roland Desktop printer that im sure has metalic and white ink option. not 64inch wide either but a great buy for a small sign shop at £5k. slow output, but you get what you pay for.

Rob I was talking about the Pro 4 with the new eco sol 2 inks, it would be great to get feedback on this as it looks very good on paper (LOL)

I can speak from experience on this.

    We have an XC540W.

This is a 4 colour version with 2 white ink channels.

Now I’ve had it 4 years.

Never changed a head, never had a blockage. Never had a problem with the white how it was setup. You need to shake the cartridges and perform extra cleaning functions. Yes its slightly more work.

The opaqueness is something I never really liked with the Roland White inks. They say the new ones are meant to be better and to be honest I still don’t like them. They only last 1 year outdoors as well. I have physically tested this outdoors. The CMYK over the white also deteriorated after a year.

Now the white ink on my FB700 is that solid people think its paint. I’m doing a job now 50m roll of CMYK and White on the FB and the client is amazed how opaque the white is. They come from an offset background and they also have issues with it.

If you’re going to need white to use as an under layer to print on top of it think again with solvent inks from what I have seen. Most clients will complain its like it almost doesn’t exist. You can try double print the white but the media might not take the ink load and you further slow down the process. If you want to use it alone or a spot colour you may get away with it.

The Roland machines in white mode are SLOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Hope that provides some insight from a real world user. Our Roland is leaving us soon as its been made redundant.

keep an eye on the white ink costs while running that on the FB…. my anapurna when it was running with white was using a litre a day on a massive run

Our FB is a white ink change over. The white isnt permanent. We’ve just finished our monthly run of white ink jobs. We used more white doing the change over then in the jobs.

This was known and the costing given to us by HP before we committed.

I only had the white ink for a week so can’t comment long term about how much white ink it wastes to keep the machine maintained. I didn’t really notice it that much in terms of my ink levels. Doing the change over wastes a lot of ink. But its factored into our pricing.

I have a VS-640 running in the white+ metallic configuration and it’s a great printer by all means.

I didn’t use the white that much but on the several projects that I did use it I was very satisfied with the result.

One thing about white and metallic is that they never really "dry". What I mean is no matter how long you leave them and it if you touch the part of the print that has the white or metallic it will smear. Lamination is therefore mandatory.

Other than that the 640 has been a great performer. Not as fast as my other printers and it will never earn itself back on it’s own but it’s the printer that gets most business through the door because it shows what we CAN do.

change over’s might actually be a good thing in the long run. it’s starting to make sense then having exclusive heads for the white as the requirement of using them is little, so overall you are saving as white head daily maintenance is costly if they are under used.
