A belated hello from Scotland
Posted by Gavin MacMillan on April 22, 2007 at 8:39 amWell thought I’d better get round to saying hello. Obviously I’ve been posting on here for a while and joined quickly with some problem or another and never got round to popping my head (literally – new avatar) in to say hi!
No prizes for guessing what I do 8-5 but for the rest of the time I’m generally found listening to music and/or with my face in a book or out on the river kayaking (went to Thurso last weekend kayak surfing – much fun!) and generally pottering around the house. Moved in here about 8 months ago so there’s always something to do. Yesterday for example I was in the rain for a good 3 hours building a shed, and today I’m going to go to work and get some foam board scraps to fix a couple of bits (2nd hand shed, acquired from a fish farm!)
Posting on a Sunday? Aye the guy I was meant to paddle with today hasn’t answered his phone so it’s straight back to the shed with no fun stuff first 🙁
Anyhoo enough of a rambling post – can you tell I’m bored?

Hi Gavin ……….. nice intro 😀
I take it you’re based up north then. I’ve been to Thurso, years and years ago, my only memory was wind, rain, wind and more rain!
Anyway …………. nice to have a face to go with the name now 😀

I doubt it Lynn ………….. we just talk more :lol1:
Maybe you should do a poll and ask everyone what their nationality is 😀 -
quote Lynn:Marcella would that not be racist 😳
Lynn
no ……………….. what makes you think that?
-
I didn’t think you were allowed to ask people where they came from anymore 🙄 or what age they were or their religion or sex ie: male female

well I’m female, 39, scottish and catholic!!!! 😀
Tell Tony Blair and his cronies there’s nothing racist about asking an honest question. -
I totally agree you are 39ish (?) maybe catholic you were at church this morning when I phoned you (?) but isn’t this country going backwards when there are questions you cant ask (?) me if any one asks me a question I will answer honestly, but some questions you can’t ask 🙄

You are so right Lynn, my sister was interviewing for new staff the other day. You can’t ask anything personal : are they married, how old are they, do they have children, do they have a criminal record, do they smoke, are they on drugs, where were they born, what education level did they achieve…. They can volunteer the information, but they can not be asked a direct question.
My sister finished up putting one young lady on, who is to be trained for the next few months to ultimately take over payroll duties for 300+ staff.
When she was given the job, she lobbed up to work on her first day and advised she was 2 months pregnant. They can’t put her off because that’s discrimination. But, in real terms, she’ll just finish her training when she’ll be going on maternity leave. So its costing the company training that will be totally wasted, plus paid maternity leave, then she may decide not to come back, but they have to keep her job open in-case she does want to come back. If she is ‘let go’ after her probation, she can argue unfair dismissal.
Truth is, my sister would still have employed her, but not in payroll. They had other jobs she could have filled, but she applied for payroll, so that’s what job she got.
They have all sorts of issues like that, but in the name of correctness, the employer has to go into these things blind. My sister is looking for someone else to take over payroll now, but she’ll probably employ a bloke who has teenage children, and a wife that stays at home. Statistically they are the most stable….
We had an employer looking for a ‘girl friday’ a few years back. Asking for a person of a specific sex for a job is a big no no, so they advertised that Bra’s and Panties will be supplied to the successful applicant. 🙄 Knowing my luck, if I did that, I’d get a transvestite apply 😕
