DVLA enforces Heavy Fines for illegal vehicle number plate suppliers.

A recent BBC investigation has uncovered widespread non-compliance among vehicle number plate manufacturers, highlighting the urgent need for any company that manufactures or supplies plates to adhere to the legal requirements.
The investigation found that multiple suppliers, particularly those selling through online marketplaces, failed to follow DVLA regulations, which puts them at risk of serious penalties.

The law is clear: before selling a number plate, suppliers must verify the buyer’s identity and entitlement to use the registration number by checking original documents such as the vehicle registration certificate. However, the BBC was able to purchase plates from seven suppliers on Amazon without providing the required documentation.

Key Findings from the Investigation:

  • Several suppliers, including Defence Line, Domo Corporation, SLS UK Holdings, and Plastic Services, sent out plates without requesting any documents.
  • Two companies, Official Plates and Meena Supplies, stated ID was required but still dispatched plates without verification.
  • Reg Locker requested documentation but sent the plates despite not receiving it, later blaming a training issue with temporary staff.

Following the revelations, Amazon has committed to removing all number plate listings except novelty plates, though this process is ongoing.

What This Means for Your Business

Non-compliance with DVLA regulations can lead to enforcement action, including heavy fines and potential legal consequences. The DVLA, police, and Trading Standards actively monitor and take action against suppliers who fail to meet legal requirements.

As a number plate manufacturer, it is your responsibility to:
✅ Verify the buyer’s identity and right to use the registration number before selling a plate
✅ Ensure all plates include the British Standard marking and the manufacturer’s name
✅ Keep records of all sales for a minimum of three years and provide them to authorities if required

Failing to comply not only risks financial penalties but also contributes to the growing problem of vehicle cloning and fraudulent plate use, which affects thousands of innocent motorists.

Take Action Now

If you are a sign company offering vehicle registration plates, now is the time to review your processes for manufacturing and supplying your customers to ensure full compliance, as the risks are too high to be ignored.
