Welsh gift shop,paint & airbrushed
Posted by Neil Davey on 9 November 2008 at 15:05Hi, this is a sign I finished a couple weeks ago on a single alupanel board just under 4m long.
Lettering is handpainted with airbrushed highlights to give a 3d effect.
I also gave it a final coat of 1Shot clear to tie everything together.

hi neil
thats really nice brush work there mate… lettering really does appear to have an embossed and raised feel to it. excellent stuff…thank you for taking the time to post your work…
-
sweet signwork there Neil….what kinda of airbrush do you use?
-
I love it!
Especially because my surname is Welsh.
Nice work.
I love your use of Arthur’s Red Sable Script as well.
Perfect.
Love….Jill -
Thank you all.
Harry, I use an Iwata Eclipse HC-CS gravity feed airbrush. I sent thinned 1Shot thru it but as this can look a little dry after application I used 1Shot sign clear to tie it all together.
Jill, Red Sable script is probably my favorite script style, I try to use it whenever I can.
I’d recommend that the guys on here check out LHF & Sign DNA, they’ve got some awesome fonts.
As a footnote, be careful when using your knives guys and gals. I’ve just got back from hospital after cutting my hand earlier today 😕 Stitched up now tho and supping on a medicinal pint of Caffrey’s to ease the pain 😀

Fantastic job mate. I agree with your choice of font sites too. My first choice when looking for something new.

I have almost got full use of my left index finger again…. after 2 years 😮
Keep taking your medicine tho Neil… it helps alot 😉

great job Neil
inspiration for others.Just a question though, if I may about the font,
if I you paint it do you still have to pay a royalty?I do buy LH fonts for use in print and vinyl, and just wondered how the system works for you guys who paint?

Thanks Shane, luckily wasn’t quite that bad but the ‘medicine’ helped alot.
Thanks Peter, as for your royalty question I also work with vinyl and buy the fonts, so I guess that covers me for lettering them with paint too. I know LHF have had to impose fines for people giving away their fonts in the past.
Personally I think that the fonts on these sites are well worth paying for.

Do you have to do serious masking for the highlights or is it freehand Neil? Never used an airbrush like this.
Also, is there an effect on the red as well? -
Harry, all the shading is airbrushed freehand. Give it a go, it really is a neat effect.
On the main lettering I airbrushed a lighter highlight on the right hand side and top and a shadow on the left & bottom. This then gives a sort of dome effect to the lettering.
The white is actually the white finish of the alupanel.

Great Job Neil…I love it
how long does something like that take?…purely man hours I mean, not drying time etc.
-
Thanks very much Glenn & Dave.
There’s about 8 hours in this Glenn but as you mention drying time, the job is spread over 3 days.
Using alupanel or similar has it’s advantages as I can start signwriting straight away, no priming and undercoating etc.

nice little job on the easel Neil
We get more reward out of these than the customer i take it they left it to you
wet on wet or varnished
your view must be like mine whatever it is, image or text ..if it can be painted ….paint it !Wales.beautiful place but is it still raining?
Terry

Thanks Terry, yes the customer left it up to me. I wanted to give what could have been a plain fascia a bit of pop, to make people look twice, the shading gives the sign a lot of dimension.
"if it stands still long enough, paint it".
Wales "is a beautiful place" what do you mean "is it raining", never stops here. Where I sit at the computer I look out at the mountain but I can’t see it for low cloud today 🙄
Neil

neil thats what i mean
low cloud… it touches the ground he he
had many a great holiday as a kid there i agree nice place
Terry -
Plenty of low cloud today Terry, and loads of rain. There’s been a lot of flooding today, homes, roads and a school. 🙁
Glad I’m working indoors this week.
By the way Terry, I love the work on your website, very inspiring. Great custom work 😮
