Magnetic Materials !!!!!!!!!
Posted by ashleedesign on 12 December 2004 at 09:26I have been asked to make magnetic signs. Where would be the best place for me to find information on these. e.g. tutorials and where would be the best place to purchase the necessary equipment. I am a newbie but thoroughly enjoying it and have found this site very helpful

Hi.
I can’t tell you where to buy them, but I can give you some advice.
I sell mags as a set of 2, 12″x24″ usually with rounded corners.
This seems to help in avoiding blow-off.
Also, make sure that there is no body putty (Bondo) in the vehicle doors,
this can cause poor adhesion.
Make sure that the vehicle has not recently been repainted, mags can lift the paint.
The vehicle should be spotless with a fresh coat of wax,
and the back of the magnetic should be wiped free of dust/dirt.
When not in use, store the mags on a fridge or a metal toolbox.
Once a week, if possible (except when it’s REAL cold out)
the magnetic should be removed from the vehicle,
and the back wiped as well as the vehicle surface
with a soft cloth to prevent condensation.
That can lead to rust and the mag becoming permanently affixed.Mags can either be hand-lettered or done in vynull.
You can also get a car painter to do you a set of mags
in the color of the vehicle (no lettering) to cover
the lettering on a car door in case the person does not want
to advertise for some reason.I like to make my mags look like regular vehicle lettering
by cutting them (with scissors!)
to a custom shape/logo.
Of course, you charge more for those.Have fun. Love….jill

If a customer is applying and removing magnetic to his van everyday, is there a risk of scratches building up over time on the vehicle where the magnetic has been? (caused by muck and dirt behind the magnetic)
If so, can vinyl be placed over the panel first to protect the paintwork and still have the magnetic stick to the side?

wwe supply top boxes and mags for taxis and driving schools and reccomend fitting a panel of clear vinyl first if the boxes or mags are removed /replaced frequently. It does reduce the magnets force slightly, but if you are using strong mag sheet it should not be a problem.
The best price we got is from cherwell, but we buy it by the roll

Phil, to me, the idea of the magnetic sign is that it is removeable.
Therefore a customer might not want a vynull panel on his vehicle.
If the car is kept clean and well-waxed, there should not be a problem with scratching.
Yeah, and I believe in the tooth fairy too.
In the real world, most folks leave their magnetics in place
until they become one with the vehicle.I got my advice from the little print-out that comes with the magnetic roll.
They say to do just as I’ve said,
and I’ve been selling mags to happy customers for years now.A lot of people turn up their noses at magnetic signs,
but if you do them right, they look great.
They are my bread and butter.
Magnetic material does come in colors and even patterns,
but I often cover the blank with vynull to make a colored background.I’ll try to post a pic of a set I’m doing this week.
It’s not the world’s greatest design, but it will buy groceries!
Love….Jill
